Mark Martin is the 8th winner
this season, with as many races!
The Bud Pole went to Rusty Wallace for his 500th career start. Rusty turned in a lap of 94.827 mph to beat his bother Kenny Wallace by .052 of a second (94.775 mph). Mike Skinner started in third place, (4th) Brett Bodine, (5th) Jeff Burton, (6th) Jerry Nadeau, (7th) Ricky Rudd, (8th) Sterling Marlin, (9) Bill Elliott, and to round out the top 10 starters is Bobby Hamilton. After 6 Busch Grand National wins, so far, this season. Martin gets his first WINSTON Cup win, shocking even himself. Martin said "We stole one today". This is Martin's 2nd win in this race the other victory was in 1992. Mark taking his 32nd career win, is the 8th winner this season, in as many races. Rusty Wallace started off on the pole and lead most of the laps in the Goody's 500. Rusty's headache's began while he was in the lead on Lap 253. The #2 Ford blew a tire, Wallace came back out in 31st position 2 laps down. He quickly came back up into the lead again, only to be involved in to wrecks, one on lap 470 and the other on lap 487. Martin gambled on his tires and stayed on the track during a caution with 64 laps to go, and dominated the remainder of the race. Mark Martin won with a margin of victory of 1.505 seconds over teammate and Native Virginian Jeff Burton said "Me finishing second today is borderline a felony, We might need to spend a few hours in jail before we go home, because we didn't deserve to finish second." Goody's is the best sponsor for this race, many left with headaches. A record tying 17, wreck filled, cautions slowed the race with an average speed of 71.161 mph, for 112 laps. When asked "What was it like out there" Jeremy Mayfield replied "Crazy. A lot of wrecks, a lot of cautions, a lot of track position, a lot of weird stuff going on." And Tony Stewart said "I saw a lot of stuff out there that I wasn't used to seeing and didn't expect to see today. Especially the last 75 or 100 laps, it was definitely a war zone out there." After problems with tires not being removed from pit lane NASCAR warned teams last week that "Right-side tears impeding other drivers are likely to result in penalties." This began in Martinsville, NASCAR wasn't kidding, they said "Each team will be responsible for picking up their right side tires immediately during a pit stop." So when the teams of Jeff Gordon, Ward Burton Ken Schrader, Kyle Petty and Kevin Lapage did not remove the tire's for a 2 tire stop, prior to the driver leaving the pit, they were penalized. There were several other penalties in the race, Matt Kenseth for not heeding to a stop sign at the end pit road. Gary Bradberry was penalized, unsure of what this was for. Mike Bliss was held on pit road, Ricky Craven and Steve Park were penalized for passing on the wrong side on restart #11. Martinsville can always brings out the tempers in a driver. Last year was Kenny Irwin and Tony Stewart, This year was no different, Steve Park and Sterling Marlin had several "Mishaps" together. But the worse temper award should probably go to John Andretti for the anger he showed to Michael Waltrip after they got together in the last laps of the race. Andretti, the races defending champion, went into the grass and Michael went on to take 3rd. Andretti, who finished 14th, ran to Waltrip's car after the race and said "There's no excuse for it, It's just real upsetting to get spun our for no reason." Michael Waltrip was visibly upset by Andretti's actions. Waltrip said "I would rather finish 15th than have happen what did," he also said (it) "hurt my heart." The race, which lasted 3 hrs., 41 min., 45., had 14 lead changes among eight drivers, Rusty Wallace 1-50, Mike Skinner 51-57, Wallace 58-104, Ward Burton 105-112, Wallace 113-143, Bobby Labonte 144-149, Wallace 150-253, Dale Earnhardt 257-298, Skinner 299-301, Ken Schrader 302-309, Michael Waltrip 310, Schrader 311-325, Wallace 326-436, Mark Martin 437-500. Martin's Win keeps Ford in the lead for the Manufacturer's Championship, with 4 wins and 51 points, they are only one point ahead of 2nd place Pontiac with 2 wins and 50 points. Chevrolet, in 3rd, also has 2 wins and they are 5 points down with 46 points. Current Points leader Bobby Labonte, finished 12th and
with Mark Martin's win there is only 36 points separating them.
