2.5-Mile Banked, Asphalt Speedway - tri-oval with 31-degree bankings in the curves, 18-degree bankings in the tri-oval and 6-degree banking on the straightaway. 
500 Miles/200 Laps 
~~43 car field. The fastest 36 through time trials and Twin 125's. 
Six provisional starting positions and 1 past champion provisional if necessary.

Race: Buddy Baker, 2/17/80, 177.602 mph 
1998 The second fastest 500 ever. Avg. Speed 172.712 mph 
1998 The second oldest winner. Dale Earnhardt (has done it all now!)

Tid Bits from The Daytona 500
• An icon in our sport will run his final Daytona 500 -- A victory for Ole' DW's Victory tour would be FANtasticl!
• Another Icon will be missed this year, Cale Yarbourgh will not have an entry in this years Daytona 500.
• I know Ernie Retired last season but not seeing him in the 500 will be sad :( Kenny Schrader will sweeten the lose in the M&M's car.
• 21 years ago CBS Aired the First Ever FLAG TO FLAG Race, this will be there final Daytona 500 as well. I personally will miss Ken Squire, Mike Joy and all the gang at CBS We owe them for bringing racing into our homes! 
• SHOCKED? -- uniform shock absorber's will be used this year. (Daytona and Talladega)
• Daytona Beach Police Color guard carried the US Flag.
• Jessie McQuire played the National Anthem on his trumpet. As 4 F-15's and fireworks flew over head (goose bumps here)
• Gentlemen Start Your Engine's was said by Goodyear Chairmen Sam Gibara
• Michael Waltrip is sore today, but ready to race!
• Geoffrey Bodine is still in Halifax Hospital's Intensive Care Unit.
• After a 32 year streak Dave Marcis will not be in the Daytona 500.
• $9.3 million in prize money.
• Jackie Joyner-Kersee Waved the Flag
• Welcome to the 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup Series!! 
• The DW Victory tour commercial brought tears to this fans eyes.......

Lap 30 - Smoke coming from the #24 Jeff Gordon Car. He pits at lap 32......
CAUTION #34 Lap # Oil on the track ... Gordon (Jeff) goes behind the wall, they lost the rear main seal. 
#75 Wally Dallenbach was blocked into his pit and he and Matt Kenseth got together.
RESTARTLap # 37 
Lap 31 - 7 mins and 12 seconds of work and Gordon comes back out 4 laps down.
Lap 50 - Bill Elliott slows down due to overheating.
Lap 69 - Bobby Hamilton lost his engine and left the field.
Lap 74 - Rookie Mike Bliss runs out of gas
Lap 78 - Mark Martin has a failed tire, he is forced to pit (17.2 seconds)
Lap 89 - Green Flagpits begin
The #12 of Jeremy Mayfield was held for speeding in pit row.
#20 Tony Stewart stalled then hit a tire and pushed it all the way up pit row.
The #3's fuel carrier slipped and spilt some gas on the truck of Dale Earnhardt's TAZ Mobile.
Lap 104 - Jerry Nadeau in the #25 is in the pits, a broken bracket belt to the chassis (Sigh :( ).
CAUTION #2 Lap # 134
#33 Joe Nemechek goes off pace, lost the motor, oil on the track
Steve Park was stopped and held to wait for the pace car.
Bobby Labonte was held for stop and go for a tire that rolled across pit lane.
DE Jr. lost several positions for trying to take off in the wrong gear.

Lap 148 Steve Park's Motor is over heating.....
CAUTION #3Lap #154 John Andretti scraped the wall
With 44 laps to go these cars can go the distance without another pit
A gas catch can fell out into pit row, not sure what teams....
A member of Tony Stewart's team is down, ANOTHER tire from the 18 team was in the way and changer/mechanic, Mike Lingerfelt went out to get the tire out of the way and Was hit by the #20 car. He has a possible leg injury. 
Mike Bliss was held on pit row a lap for um I dunno? (Shrug)

CAUTION #4Lap #169 Derrick Cope's #15 Bud Moore Car hit the wall .. lost a motor

Dale Earnhardt and Jimmy Spencer got together....Michael Waltrip spins, the #21 of Elliott Sadler car, the #55 Kenny Wallace,Ed Barrier and Chad Little were all involved.

4 laps to go.....after 2 taps to Bensons car Dale Jarrett took the lead....and the 1999 WINSTON Cup Champ take The 2000 Daytona 500 a 2 million dollar pay day. A 3 time 500 winner. Tears of Joy roll down Todd Parrot's face.....Dale Earnhardt left his Donut on the #88 Car.

Jimmy Spencer's loses the tire in his #26 K'mart car it hits the wall on the last lap, Spencer needed to be held up from and carried down off the track to the streatcher....leg or ankle injury?
